Independent school selection, admissions and entrance preparation
UK school admissions planning and educational guardianship are separate services. Explore school selection, application timelines, entry assessments and interview preparation.
Start with the intended entry point (7+, 11+, 13+ or 16+), then shortlist schools based on academic readiness, English, interests, personality, boarding needs and budget. Independent schools have their own admissions processes.
Review school entry points, registration deadlines and boarding availability; some 13+ schools register early.
Assess English, maths, reasoning, writing and interview readiness; shortlist schools.
Register and prepare for ISEB Pre-Test, UKiset or school-specific assessments as required.
Attend assessments, interviews and visits; review offers, waiting lists and scholarships.
Confirm acceptance, deposit, CAS and visa documentation, boarding, insurance and guardianship.
Plan induction, academic and language transition and communication with school staff.
These are indicative planning windows, not universal deadlines. Check individual admissions pages, especially for early 13+ registration.
| Entry point | Common requirements |
|---|---|
| 7+/8+ entry | English reading, writing, maths and interview; confirm age and boarding availability. |
| 11+ / Year 7 | English, maths, reasoning and interviews; school reports may also be required. |
| 13+ / Year 9 | Some schools use ISEB Common Pre-Test, Common Entrance or bespoke tests; early registration may apply. |
| 16+ / Sixth Form | GCSE/IGCSE or equivalent grades, subject suitability, English, interviews and sometimes subject tests. |
International applicants should also check visa sponsorship, CAS eligibility, boarding age, English requirements and guardianship arrangements.
Note: These 20 schools are a reference shortlist, not an independently verified overall ranking of UK boarding schools. Some offer day or mixed boarding provision; check each school’s official admissions information.
Listed in the order published by Atom Learning for 2026, using 2025 A-level, GCSE and IB results. Some schools are predominantly day schools with limited boarding; this is not a ranking of full-boarding provision.
